Success Story: Emmanuel's Journey to hope

In February 2024 while visiting Sierra Leone to attend my father's funeral, I had a life-changing encounter that reaffirmed my commitment to helping those in need. During my stay, I visited a hospital in the Model Secondary School area for a dental check-up and stumbled upon a young boy named Emmanuel selling sachets of water on the street. His condition was visibly poor, and it was apparent he needed help.

My instincts kicked in, and I approached Emmanuel, asking him about his life. He shared that he was living with his aunt and grandfather in the Dwazark community after losing both of his parents. Emmanuel was trying to earn a bit of money by selling water in the morning before attending school in the afternoon, demonstrating resilience despite the challenges he faced. Recognizing his determination and vulnerability, I gave him my business card and a small amount of money for lunch urging him to have his aunt contact me. Later that day, I received a call from his aunt, and we arranged for Emmanuel to meet me at our office at True Hope Foundation. When Emmanuel arrived the next day, I introduced him to our staff and recounted how we met. The team engaged him in conversation to assess his wellbeing and educational status. I sensed that Emmanuel needed immediate support, so I asked Isha, our social worker, to visit his home and learn more about his living conditions.

Isha visited Emmanuel’s home and met his caregiver, Aunty Miatta, who explained that she allowed Emmanuel to sell water simply to keep him occupied. Unfortunately, his grandfather was hospitalized at that time, further complicating Emmanuel situation. Isha returned to our office with details about Emmanuel struggles, including the absence of his father, which further deepened my resolve to assist him. I asked his aunt what Emmanuel needed for school, and he mentioned that he required school fees and materials for his lessons since he was in grade six. I provided him with a small amount of money to cover these expenses, which is four hundred Leones (Le 400). As the weeks went on, I stayed in touch with Aunty Miatta about Emmanuel’s well-being.. A few weeks later, I revisited Emmanuel and his aunt. I expressed my intention to take responsibility for Emmanuel education and well-being, making it clear that I wanted to see him out of the streets and focused on his studies. Aunty Miatta mentioned that Emmanuel was sometimes playful, which was why she had him sell water. I stressed the importance of seriousness regarding his education.

From that point onward, I maintained regular contact with Aunty Miatta regarding Emmanuel well-being. After Emmanuel’s grandfather was discharged from the hospital, I shared my encounter with Emmanuel and my intentions to support him. This conversation led me to express a desire to adopt Emmanuel, which his grandfather promised to consider and discuss further. I also sought to contribute more meaningfully to their welfare, so I reached out to Isha for advice. She suggested supporting Aunty Miatta with a business to improve their financial stability. She expressed interest in restarting her palm oil business, which previously required a capital of three thousand Leones. I decided to provide her with four thousand four hundred fifty-eight Leones (Le 4,458): three thousand for her business and the rest for Emmanuel school fees.
